As a musician myself, It was so great to have a conversation about music during our session, including laugh, jokes and great stories.
As always, preparation, discussion on ideas and advice on what to wear.
We planned 4 sets to shoot in 4 hours : headshot against white background. lifestyle set, full lenght and a levitation sort of set. We managed to take more portraits using his brass instruments : trombone and trumpet.
I included an orange gel to use some of the sets like on the levitation one, complementing the cyan background and the Chinese top.
Come and shoot with me ! Have your unique, colourful images to get you more gigs and recording deal !
Gel lighting continues. I read a great article about how
subtractive and additive colours work. Really fascinating piece…colours are fantastic.
I met Ana, a London based designer for a quick discussion over a coffee at London
Bridge : make-up, available dresses and date. Anar London is a Luxury Womenswear
Brand https ://www.anarlondon.com/
I got Charlotte, a beautiful model from Frame Perfect Agency and Johanna Monti
make-up artist on board. I had a good feeling that this session would go smoothly
and Ana’s two shiney leather jackets would work beautifully with colours, mostly
red/orange and cyan.
I planned 45 min for make-up and two hours’ shooting time achieving three sets and I was spot on with timing. The make-up was elegantly simple. I didn’t want to drive the
attention away from the colours.

I do my own retouch to make sure it hits the level I expect on my work. If the hair is messy, it needs a careful edit and it sometimes take up to 4 hours. Phhh. Yes, it’s one of the hardest thing to do and it can be really complex : cut background out, replace some part of the background, shape the hair, clean it, fill the gaps etc… Here are the before after set I made for you to compare.
I am really pleased with the result, no matter how mind-bending it is to setup and execute, giving the WoW factor for those final images is always a winner.

Chasing Deer are an exciting and energetic pop/rock band from the UK.
Before the actual photoshoot, we discussed and planned the session beforehand. Theme-style-outfit…We need an outdoor place. I had an idea : I walked to the back yard to take some pics of what we have where I live. I sent the pics and they liked it. Location done ! So, the band wanted some traditional, naturally posed photos, monochrome or bold solid ones and smart clean image. Cool ! I know what to do.
When they arrived at my studio, I’ve already prepared the studio lights. Quick chat, discussion on where we start and we were ready to shoot. Yuhuuuu ! The guys got a nice, elegant suit and I saw instantly that my light what I planned to use was just perfect : a big softbox camera left, up high and a rim light at the far, camera right.
YES, it was a fantastic surprise for Dominika, a jewellery designer from Slovakia. One of my friends had bought her the ear ring some time ago and she showed me. Instantly, I liked it and started to think what colours I should use on my lights. EXCITING ! I just love how I get inspired. Don’t you always plan ? As for me, most of the time I think of some concepts and realising the basic rules of colours when I browse on the net or go out.
Quickly found Julie https ://www.instagram.com/impensjulie/ who was keen to be apart of my project and also she had awesome selection of dresses which were just perfect. Thank you for your great taste :) I needed a MUA and Nioka https ://www.instagram.com/niokaann_makeup/ was free on that day. Awesome ! All set up and the day came. Yuhuuuuu.
Before they arrived at 9 :30 am at my studio, I had set all my lights and put my set of gels out to match the dresses. Ok then, here we go. We all shared ideas and worked on colour concepts, dress, background, make-up and poses. Nioka started to apply an elegant make-up on Julie.
Let’s test and see how colours interact. Not too bad, right ?
The pose wasn’t easy and Julie was just awesome to manage it every single time. It was so stunning because of the triangle light I created to enhance the ear ring. 1 cm to left, 2 cm down and hold still ! Don’t breathe ! :D This is how specific it was. Phhh
I am really meticulous so I asked Nioka to brush the ear ring !
Agency represented model, Ana had a headshot session in middle of March. She needed to update her profile images at different web platforms. For this headshot I used my favourite hand painted background made in Japan.
We did four outfit changes to have a nice variation to choose from less than two hours. I made quick behind the scenes video.
Headshot and music promo photography for a really talented young musician, singer, guitarist and teacher. I met him last year, he played with his band in North London and I can tell, his music got the energy and good vibe. Loved it !
He has been working on his career and to boost it he needed a lot of pro images to achieve the best. Csongor phoned me last week and I was already planning the shoot and having some ideas, specially coloured gel shooting. I asked him to send me some reference images to see what he is after and told him what to bring. After couple of emails, we nailed the shooting date.
We started with head-shot. If you ever wondered how I work hit the play.
After that we moved to the music promo shoot. I opened my brand new colour gel set, quick thinking about colour schemes, what colour works with the other. Fascinating ! I always loved colours and working towards my colour portfolio it’s a fantastic project and it comes with a complicated learning curve. Challenge accepted !
The final set after 4 hours well spent in the studio.

Ohh, this was a surprise and I feel thrilled. My Gangster Life composite image made it in the top selection at the SWPP convention 2017, @thesocieties. I can’t describe how I feel…What does the composite image mean ? Compositing is the combining of visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene
A big thank to Robbie Hunte who was a brilliant model. He has just started in the modelling industry when we did our session and since my images he is flying high. Good luck man and don’t forget me when you work for big fish :D
Also, need to thank to my friends and family, helping me through the process.
GANGSTERLIFE got framed and displayed at ground floor. Looks good, right ?
Yes, I received a medal. Entered the 20×16″ Competition – merited images will be displayed for 15,000 visitors to view in the Convention Tradeshow Area.
What does it mean ? It means the five judges of the SWPP critique and score the image. The GANGSTERLIFE received around 90 points. Unfortunately I could not attend on the judges day…But I met Rod Jackson who used to be a judge and he told me some tiny details of what changes should have made…Insane details but good to keep in mind. Like the milk drop seems too planed, maybe 2 – 3 drops would have made a better image. Do you agree ?
I got lovely feedback of random people and some of them even laughed at it what was my main idea, make the people laugh. I achieved what I wanted trough my art.
I offer an extraordinary portrait photography session for everyone, families, couples, business owners, basically everyone. If you have an idea get in touch and I will make it happen. Email email@example.com or call 07889259752 for more information. You are welcome to look at my composite images at http ://www.photoshippy.com/albums/levitation-2/
It was great to work Chris again but in my studio to create his first model portfolio. We had a chat before the session about what type of images he should have, what area he wants to explore and what to wear. In my opinion he would suit in the advertisement section. Got him to bring some suits, shirts, shoes and a fitness set as well to my studio, near Seven Sisters, North London. I made a list of different lighting set ups and backgrounds to give a versatile finish which is a key for a great model portfolio. First, we started with a headshot as an opening image, simple with the white shirt. I used my three light set up here, two rim light, one beauty dish with grid and a DIY white reflector. Not in the video though.
We made three headshots to have a variety of it and then I looked at his suits and his watch. I had an idea to go for a “product” advertisement photoshoot and we did two sets using one rim light, one hard light with grid for the watch and one beauty dish with grid.
Next was to use my printed, vintage background to go for a movie type of shot. Here, I used three gels to get more options for him to pick.
Before we went out to the local centre, we shot the fitness images, using two rim light, one hard light with gel and a beauty dish with grid. After that a casual outfit near by and we done. Thankfully the sun was out and it was so great to step out of the studio. Selfie time ! :)
I knew Richard from Linkedin and he contacted me to have some promotional images for his new packages. Have a look at his web and get fit with his help, specially if you leave around Bromley, bespoke packages for everyone. www.6by6fit.uk/
He wanted to use a professional model and I helped him to find the right model, Chris Ferguson was up for it. Everything was planned. We set up two possible shooting days if the weather won’t permit to take pictures outside so we had a back up date. Fortunately, we were lucky, the sun was out and everything went smoothly.
We met at Bromley South station and walked to a near park, it wasn’t busy. I choose a kinda “close” location where we could work without any distraction. I set up two flashes to generate highlights and give a more studio feel, edgy look. It took around one hour and we got what we wanted to get. Happy customer means a lot in my business. Ready to work on images.
What I really like about the Character series is to put myself in the condition where I need to solve or at least find the best way to create a story, using only hard lights to create shapes and forms within only five images.
As much as I would like to tell about Rebecca’s personality and character I would like you to find out. My aim isn’t nail it exactly but to give you a bit of time to think about it. I hope I can hear your thoughts on this.
I was looking for to have a versatile and creative photography session with one of the most talented person at my Seven Sisters studio last week. Zoe has so many characters, she is a cellist, performer, composer, media commentator and educator. If you are up for a fun, musical cabaret show, visit her website to check the dates and watch her to play : http ://zoemartlew.com/
As I always, I discussed her ideas over the phone before the session. This allows me to see clearly, work on ideas, prepare and estimate the session. She wanted some fun cabaret, some cello and a headshot image.
The day had come, I was already prepared. I got my 3 lights set up to start with the funky cabaret shots. I knew my magenta and blue colour galed lights would work for Zoe. This gave the desired feel and atmosphere.
And.…here is may favorite part. Zoe wanted to have some cello promo shots but not like the other “boring” ones like 2 millions already been taken, she wanted some unique ones. So it got me thinking and I suggested her, just relax on the floor. LOL
I would not say that I wasn’t over the moon when I received an email from SWPP featuring my image “GANGSTERLIFE” as Judges’ Choice Award. :) I didn’t expect any awards for this picture so I was I bit shocked. My second image of the composite/creative world payed off. EPIC !
What does the image competition mean ? They have photo contest in various categories each month. The Gold award images are put towards the end of the year awards. Around 1000 entries each month, 52 Gold awards won in March. (Gold awards are very hard to get)
So, how did it happen ?
One of my model, Susan suggested me to work with Robbie Hunte who started modelling about 2 moths ago at this time. I looked at his portfolio and I new this guy need some serous images. Soon, he arrived at my studio with a fantastic, 1920’s-1930’s outfit, looking stunning. Firstly, I took images for my Character series
and then we went for the composite photography work. I planed two sets, one is the GANGSTERLIFE and the other one is still in progress. Believe me, it will be awesome (I hope I can manage it…I need to learn and find new Photoshop tricks to achieve my imagination…long practice and failure ahead.) Keep tuned folks and come back to see the second image probably ready in June.

We had a fantastic photosession at my studio last week. Elisa needed some striking images for her new website and start a freelancer career in London. We spent plenty of time at my studio to create her portfolio, talked through different ideas, looked at her outfit selection and discussed some options before we started. I even got some dumbbels, kettlebells and a fitness bench to have a nice variety of images. I also used a red light to make it more versatile and I think it’s worked. Don’t you agree ?
I’d like to hear your thoughts on this.
Contact me if you would like to have some new images for your website, flyer and business card.
I love my job, photographing people and documenting what’s happening in the event like Promoting the UK Fit Tech Sector by Racefully at the Crowdshed, London.
Plenty of food and drinks waited for the guests.
The location was perfect to held this event from 6 :30 pm near Tottenham Court Road. David Naylor was the host and he made everyone at ease. After the informal chatting and drinking the event started featuring some of the well know people in the fitness industry.
I’m looking for a couple, maybe two couples (doesn’t have to be engaged) to do a fun photo session on the 7th of June. I’m still searching to find the best place to shoot in North London. The session will last for up to two hours.
The concept is a levitating couple.
The right dress is really important so I look for something with long skirt like maxi dress/tea length dress, a flowing garment. If you have your wedding dress and love to experience with it then grab your man and come to the session.
If we have time then it ‘s a great fun to use some props like a long veil, scarfs, balloons hats, your favorite item. Please bring any possible objets and extra clothes for the session.
I have some theme to photograph : glamorous, traditional, rocky, romantic.
If you feel you are up for a fun and unique experiment then get in touch. I’ll send you more information about the session.
You will receive the picture for free. It will be displayed on www.bridalphoto.me

Music photography with Chris Ellis and Sara Aras models. I work with Frame Perfect agency and they kindly found two models for me. Wanted to make a music portrait session to capture their emotion, their expression while listening they favorite music.
I planned two type of sets : expression and editorial. I sent a mood-board and briefly explained what the session is about.
When Chris came to my studio, Seven Sisters on bike from all away from Watford I was already impressed. Quickly checked his clothes, Korell Williams from Creerhair Styling arrived and he helped us.
After the hair and beard styling was done I already set up my lights and was ready to rock. (some tricks learned how to manage beard to shine…weird for me) Anyway, got some awesome shots in less then 10 minutes.
Sara arrived on time, quick clothes checking and she was ready for the makeup and hair. Korell and his friend did it fantastically, taking care of every detail, meticulously precise.
While I checked the images on screen, Chris was busy getting ready for the second set
and Sara was…
We had so much fun, specially when Sara flipped her hair in the air. Yeah ! That’s more like it.
We are looking for a London based, long hair female model, between the ages of 24 – 28, for a photo session from 2 pm for an hour or two on the 27th of March, Seven Sisters, North London. We pay £15/hour+travel expenses. This is a photoshoot and you will be required to sit at a desk against a backdrop and blow smoke. This will probably not be ideal for you if you have quit smoking or are a non smoker. We will be using herbal smoke (often used in TV) to minimise impact. What we look for in the image is to have emotion to be delivered.
You will appear smart, as if dressed for a PA or office role at in the City. You might need to make a natural looking make-up.
Apply with your recent look (link or image) to firstname.lastname@example.org.
I met Jon, one of the most inspiring musician in Dudley.
Jon has a fantastic vintage set of items : amps, a guitar, keyboard, radio (more stuff what I can’t remember what they called) and lots of vinyls. We talked like we knew each other for years. I always enjoy working with fellow musicians just so easy to connect. Playing on drums for so many years makes my stories endless.
I went done to meet him at his place from London and unfortunately the weather wasn’t sunny but at least it didn’t rain on Wednesday. After I put my heavy suitcase at his home, we went to the local castle ruin where I set up my two flashes, one with a blue gel on it, placed in the doorway to give a rim light effect. The other one 45 degree away form him, to give a bit of “Rembrandt” lighting style.
After taking images for half an hour we went to choose an other “background” where I only spent 2 min with set up. I didn’t feel the cold but I knew that I need to hurry. 11 – 14 clicks and I got what I wanted.
Walked back to his flat, hot tea and he told me about his idea for the cover : psychedelic lighting with rim lights effects, like on the stage. That was a challenge what I like ! So I set up one flash with gel and gobos camera right, next to his amp thinking to give a sharp narrow light on side, enhancing the texture of the amp. The mono block, near camera to enhance his head with grid and ND filter on it to narrow the light and keep the ambient light. Couple of clicks, not even close ! Too much light ! Ok, get rid off the mono block and set up the other flash with gel and gobos camera left. I was getting there. Sensitive tweaking on the left flash, getting the hair light only. Lots of tiny adjustment but still not entirely right. The guitar neck is in the shadow, need to get one light on. But how ? No space in the room.
How about if I put the light behind it, giving a silhouette effect to the guitar. Cool ! That worked but still too much light ! I need something on the light to give a colour effect to the wall and make it less strong. So I ask : Do you have a thin, light fabric I could use ? Jon says : Yes. Couple of seconds later he gave me his favourite fabric. I cover the light and click. That was it ! So much better ! Final adjustment on the flashes and camera setting and I was on the way to get the perfect shot. Done ! I checked the time : 35 minutes to my train departures in Dudley. I needed to hurry, quick packing away, call the cab and I was ready in 9 min, run down to the cab.
I tried to keep myself calm but want to catch my train. I arrived just 4 min before it comes. Quick payment and run to the stairs.I felt like my suitcase became much heavier than in the morning was. “Running up” the stairs and after that I still have time to relax for a minute.
I was looking at some Photo Noir images last week and I still love it so I was wondering how I can come up with something great. I hope, it does give the some feel to you like I do. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. I created some shapes and tried to make it as good as possible with long exposure time. This is experimental so don’t be so cruel. :)
I can’t thank enough to Dolly Daydream
(Lauren Crane) pin-up model to help me out on this. She spent 4 hours in the dark while I was doing light paint in my studio and taking care of the studio light as well. She is wonderful and really patient. During the session, I showed her the result on Mac, I really enjoy shooting tethered, controlling the photography is always beneficial.
More details for a fellow photographers : I set up two Elinchrom lights at second sync, using my Canon 580EXII on top of my camera to trigger my monobloks. I bit of trick if you don’t have lots of expensive stuff like me but want to move forward. Don’t worry of the speed light, just set it at minimum power and use a black panel to block the light.
